A sperm analysis is one of the most important first steps in understanding male fertility. It examines a semen sample to assess sperm count, motility, and shape, helping our team identify anything that may affect the chance of pregnancy.

With Thérapie Fertility, testing is designed to give you clear, useful information without unnecessary steps. A semen sample can tell us a lot, but it is always looked at alongside your medical history and, where relevant, other fertility tests for men. You do not need to be ready for treatment to have testing. Many people choose a sperm analysis to understand their fertility health and the options available to them.

What is a sperm analysis?

A sperm test is often one of the first and most useful steps in assessing male fertility. At our clinic, semen analysis looks at three key things: how many sperm are present in the semen sample, how they move, and how they look. Together, these findings can help show whether sperm factors may be affecting the chance of pregnancy.

Male fertility is just as important as female fertility when trying to make a baby. A sperm analysis can provide clear, practical information about sperm health, whether you are trying to conceive now, planning ahead, or preparing for fertility treatment. It is a minimally invasive test; results are available quickly, and you do not need to be ready for treatment to have testing. If more detail is needed, we may also recommend sperm DNA fragmentation testing or other male fertility investigations. A sperm test can give useful information about male fertility and help identify whether sperm factors may be affecting the chance of pregnancy. It can be a helpful first step if you have been trying to conceive without success, are planning fertility treatment, or simply want a clearer understanding of your fertility health.

    Consultation and preparation

    Your testing journey starts with a free consultation with one of our fertility nurses. We will talk through your history, any previous results and any questions you may have about the test.

    Before your sperm analysis, our team will explain how to prepare your sample and whether there are any timing recommendations. Clear preparation helps ensure the result is as useful and accurate as possible.

    Producing the sample

    The sample is produced through ejaculation and then examined in the laboratory. Patients often ask where this happens and how the process works, so our team will explain this clearly before your appointment.

    Once the sample is provided, the laboratory team assesses key features of semen and sperm quality.

    Results and next steps

    Once your results are available, they will be shared through your patient portal. One of our fertility specialists will then talk you through them in more detail, so you understand what they mean for you.

    Your results may help guide the next step, whether that is further testing, review of other factors, or discussion of treatment options, such as IVF or surgical sperm retrieval, where appropriate. You may also decide not to move forward with treatment at this stage. Either way, the information can help you plan with more clarity.
